We LOVE rec-ute side-by-sides, and this year saw the addition of some new contenders with the Polaris Xpedition and Segway Villain. Are those two good enough to dethrone our long-time favorite, the Yamaha RMAX? Let’s get into it!

We thought a $35,000 UTV would make the $82,500 Ford Bronco Raptor look silly off road, so we pitted a 2023 Kawasaki KRX 4 against a 2023 Ford Bronco Raptor to find out! Was our prediction right, or did the Bronco blow us away?

We’ve put over 20,000 miles on our 2006 Toyota Sequoia in just over a year. It has towed everything from a 1,600-pound utility rig to a 22-foot car trailer loaded down with 4,000 pounds of project car. It’s a beast, and with a few choice mods, we think it proves you don’t need a $75,000 truck to tow your UTV!

We never leave the trailhead without our excellent Rhino USA gear.
--
We have spent the last couple years testing and reviewing all manner of tool organization and recovery gear storage solutions on our trips around the country. We’ve tried everything from a massive, heavy duffle bag full of straps and tools, to organized, hard-sided boxes.
Everything felt like a compromise till we found Rhino USA. Their Cordura nylon bags are damn near indestructible, and they’re simple, no-nonsense affairs that don’t needlessly tack on bells and whistles you’ll never use.
Their recovery gear is similarly excellent and easy to use. We take four of their burly soft shackles and a ⅝-inch kinetic rope out with us, and it’s all packed away into a compact Rhino carry bag.
And, before you dismiss this as breathless advertising for a product we got given, let us assure you: We paid retail price for all of the gear you see here. It’s that good. Check it out in the video above, and then do us a favor and like the video and subscribe to our YouTube channel.

With new scenery around every corner, even a 10-mile loop feels like a daylong trek.

Having grown up in the Pacific Northwest, I never put a trip to Alaska high on my priority list. I’ve caught salmon and seen bears in the wild—and Oregon has plenty of mountains. They’re not as big as the peaks in Alaska, sure, but they’re big nonetheless. Despite my indifference, however, when my dad and brother started kicking around the idea of a father-and-sons outing to Alaska a little over a year ago, I was all in.
An avid fisherman and our in-house travel agent, my brother lined up two of our three days to be spent on a fishing charter out of Knudson Cove Marina near Ketchikan, Alaska. While I do enjoy fishing, my approach to travel and visiting new areas is more “when in Rome…” So rather than double up on a single activity, I wanted to explore my options. With all that untouched wilderness out there, an off-roading adventure seemed like just the ticket.
Fortunately for me, I lucked out and discovered Ketchikan AdventureVue, a guided UTV excursion company just outside of Ketchikan. Owner Bethany Lickfield had space on a tour and was happy for me to jump on and join them.
It’s important to mention that much of the economy of port cities like Ketchikan, Juno, and Sitka revolves around tourism. Hundreds of thousands of visitors flock to these cities from April through October by plane as well as cruise ship, and many have only a few hours while in port to jump on a fishing charter, or in this case, ride a shuttle bus 10 or so miles up a very remote mountain road to their excursion.
After an epic day of salmon fishing to kick off our trip, my brother and dad went out for round two, while I made my way up the mountain to the AdventureVue base camp. Since I wasn’t on the cruise-line schedule, I arrived early to meet Beth, chat with her guides, and just get a taste for how the whole operation worked. In a former life, I spent several summers as a white water raft guide, so I’m accustomed to the whole “tourist” thing and I was curious to see how that played out in the UTV world...

Trail 15 at Windrock OHV has a reputation for violence. Most riders linger for a moment, eye the series of stone steps, then make for less ominous terrain. That’s been us for the better part of a year, but our 2020 Can-Am Maverick X3 X RS Turbo RR is a different story. Was our time and money well-spent?
--
Trail 15 at Windrock OHV has a reputation for violence. It sits like a threat, one of the first routes off of the park’s main paved road, promising all manner of pain for first-time visitors. Most riders linger for a moment, eye the series of stone steps, then heed their better angels and make for less ominous terrain. That’s been us for the better part of a year. Anytime we headed to Windrock with a test unit, we’d have to ride past that double-black-diamond route for fear of having to call a manufacturer and tell them that gravity and a few lumps of sandstone had turned their shiny new side-by-side to slag. But our project 2020 Can-Am Maverick X3 X RS Turbo RR is a different story. I wouldn’t have to call Papa BRP if we put that one on its lid.
And we’ve slowly built the machine to handle routes like this. With bumpers front and rear, rock sliders, and a beefy Warn winch, the X3 can bounce off of just about anything without doing any serious damage. Add in our 35-inch BFGoodrich KM3 tires and KMC beadlock wheels, and we’ve got the equipment to make short work of serious routes. At least, that was the plan.
The trail doesn’t waste any time. The second your tires leave the pavement, you’re climbing. And while the sandstone offers up more grip than the slick clay and limestone we’re accustomed to seeing on the East Coast, it won’t do much to pull you up the mountain. For that, you’ll need throttle. Lots of it. How’d it go?

We're updating our 12,000-mile project 2019 Can-Am Defender HD8! This is how to bedline your side-by-side, from prep to spray. For more on our workhorse, check out UTVDriver.com, and be sure to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
--
After our trip to Marshall, Texas, to visit the crew at Thumper Fab, our 12,000-mile 2019 Can-Am Defender HD8 was wearing a spate of new parts. All that gorgeous black powdercoat only served to highlight just how hammered the rest of the rig is, with a faded and cracked bed and dinky factory wheels and tires. We considered a few options to solve that first problem, from new bed panels to vinyl wraps, but finally settled on bedlining the old plastic components.
To be clear: This is an experiment. When we called our local Line-X to get their opinion on spraying a UTV bed, they said they wouldn’t touch the machine because they’ve had adhesion problems in the past. That didn’t worry me too much knowing that our bed won’t see the kind of abuse a pickup typically endures. At worst, our Defender will need to move some photography gear and a cooler, and survive the occasional tree branch. With that in mind, we snagged a cheap bedliner kit from our local parts store and got to work.
You can check out our how-to video below. The project took the better part of a day, but made a massive difference in how the machine looks, and for a fraction of the cost of new panels. Even used bedsides in passable condition start at around $200, and replacing the entire bed will set you back closer to $800. Even with supplies, bedlining our Defender set us back less than $200. Not bad.
Full story here: https://utvdriver.com/story/utv-maintenance/how-to-bedline-can-am-defender-hd8-project-build-video/
Note: Amazon has the same kit we used for around $210 bucks. Call your local parts store. We found our kit for closer to $150 locally.
